Gaming Thursday: To MMO or not to MMO?

Hello dudes and dudettes,

Today's gaming Thursday has made me think a lot about a question I keep asking myself every time a new mmo comes out - should I do it? The answer is 'Yes' 99% of the times. Because mmos are just so much fun.
Or maybe it's the nostalgia factor taking over me.

My first MMO was when I was 12, the very popular at the time, Ragnarok Online. It was great - I made most of my childhood friends in that game. Looking back at the game itself, it's really nothing impressive, loads of grind, but uber adorable, just like any Korean game.

Next one that I really got hooked into was Lineage II. I was actually pretty late for the party, since I refused to play 3D games for a very long time, I thought they looked ugly back then. I still think they did. Early WoW days? Runescape? Everquest? - I thought they were all super ugly. I couldn't stand looking at the characters.  But Dark Elves in Lineage II? Awwwyyeahhh baby.

I've probably played everything that came out before and after those two, but these are the only games that I've played for actual years. I really enjoyed Guild Wars for a long time as well, there was Aion Online in the beginning, EVE Online until I decided 'fuck it, I'm not gonna read all this' - I probably spent more time on the character creation than the game itself to be honest.... then FFXIV. I've been playing FFXIV since it re-came out. I tried playing the first version of the game, even bought a Collector's Edition, but it was quite crap. However, then the unthinkable and unimaginable happened - they took a crap game and made it into an awesome game! Who knew things like that happened in the game industry, huh?

And now, to add to the pile of no-livery, I've just started Wildstar Online.

When I say 'mmo' to people the usual reaction is 'oh, no life huh?' it's highly associated with spending a lot of hours and hours and hours on a single game with the sole purpose of grinding the best equipment. However, I'd like to take a moment away from that and look on the positive side: I owe my awesome communication skills thanks to MMORPGs. I used to be a very timid, shy and closed up teenager with no confidence to ever talk to people. That changed when I started playing more MMORPGs and when I made more friends online. I was able to learn so much about different cultures and people from all around the world, without travelling at all. It was one of the most educational and social things I have done in my life and I have no regrets. All those hours spent online, chatting to people and grinding that stupid gear - I wouldn't change that even if I could. I take more pleasure and find it more fun than any other social activity I can think of. No life? More like extra social.image
